Community Unites for Park Clean Up Days

Published: September 08, 2025

Community spirit was in full force this past weekend as volunteers joined Visit Hickory NC and partners Outdoor NC, Catawba County Parks, Keep Catawba County Beautiful, Catawba County Library System, Duke Energy, and Pepsi Bottling Group for a shoreline cleanup at Riverbend Park.

The event, held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m., brought together residents, families, and outdoor enthusiasts to give back to one of Catawba County’s most beloved outdoor destinations. Volunteers gathered at the riverfront picnic shelter before rolling up their sleeves to remove litter from the trails, trees, and shoreline areas of the park and around Oxford Dam.

Thanks to the combined efforts of the community and our partners, the cleanup was a success. A total of 41 volunteers participated, first clearing litter along Riverbend Park’s trails and shoreline before moving to Oxford Dam. Because the park is located downstream of the dam, it can collect debris washing down from upstream, and much of what was removed had been carried in by flooding from Hurricane Helene. In total, volunteers collected approximately 1,548 pounds of trash and debris, helping to protect wildlife, preserve natural areas, and improve conditions for both park visitors and downstream communities.

In addition to the rewarding experience of helping the environment, the first 25 volunteers to arrive received free t-shirts to commemorate their efforts. Following the cleanup, participants enjoyed a well-earned lunch provided by Duke Energy, with beverages generously supplied by Pepsi Bottling Group.

“Events like this show the power of partnerships and community pride,” said Elizabeth Clark, Marketing Manager at Visit Hickory NC. “By coming together, we’re not only keeping our parks beautiful but also fostering a stronger connection between residents, visitors, and the natural spaces that make Catawba County so special.”

This cleanup event at Riverbend Park is part of a larger effort to encourage sustainable outdoor recreation and promote environmental stewardship throughout the Hickory Metro. Visit Hickory NC and Catawba County Parks are committed to continuing this initiative, with the next cleanup scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025 at Bakers Mountain Park from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. Community members are encouraged to attend and help keep our parks healthy and vibrant.

The Riverbend Park cleanup is a reminder that small actions—like picking up litter—can add up to a big impact. Together, we can ensure that Catawba County’s parks remain clean, safe, and inviting for generations to come.
